EIGHT FORKLIFT TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE
Here are the essential reminders forklift operators should keep in mind to protect themselves and their coworkers while operating a propane powered lift truck.
TIP 1
One of the many parts of a forklift cylinder is the pressure relief valve, which provides over pressure protection to the cylinder. It should be kept clean, unrestricted, set to the twelve o’clock position and directed upward at a 45-degree angle when the cylinder is mounted horizontally.
TIP 2
The seat belt on forklifts is designed to protect the operator in case of a tip-over, which is why it’s essential to buckle up before driving your forklift.
TIP 3
To help prevent accidents, forklift operators should stop the forklift and set the brake before raising and lower the forks. Accidents can occur when approaching a load too fast or turning to rapidly.
TIP 4
Maintain a safe distance from ramps to prevent dangerous tip-overs. When descending a ramp with a loaded forklift, always travel in reverse to keep the load pointed up the grade. When travelling up a ramp with an unloaded forklift, always keep the forks pointed downgrade.
“Propane-powered forklifts will do more than move inventory. They’ll give your productivity and bottom line a big lift, too.”
TIP 5
Avoid dangerous conditions at cross aisles and anywhere else that the forklift visibility of the forklift may be obstructed by slowing down and sounding the horn.
TIP 6
Unless it is properly secured an unattended forklift is a danger to the operator and others. When parking, always leave the forklift in neutral and lower the forks to the floor. Also set the parking brake.
TIP 7
When a propane forklift is not in use always turn the safety propane valve clockwise (off) completely.
TIP 8
Store all propane cylinders outside in a secure cage that is protected from the sun and rain.
